Hospitality Team Member

    Job description

    “Hospitality, with your evenings off”

Anyone who has worked in hospitality knows the drill: closing up long after the city has gone quiet, and catching your friends just as they’re heading home. Not here. At Het Lage Licht, the restaurant of the Maritiem Museum Rotterdam, you mostly work daytime and weekend shifts. Only the occasional event keeps you there in the evening. So most evenings are simply yours.

Your workplace? A restaurant on the water in the heart of Rotterdam’s Maritime District, inside a museum full of ships and harbour stories. Visitors drift in from an exhibition, the coffee machine is running, and you make sure everyone feels welcome.

Part-time student, recent grad or gap year?

This job gives you solid hours and a steady income, while keeping most evenings free for your studies, friends, sport or that side project you keep meaning to start. You also build experience that looks good on any CV: working to HACCP food-safety standards, knowing your allergens, running events and keeping your cool during the lunch rush. And you can get your BHV (workplace emergency response) and AED certificates with us.

Why this isn’t your average hospitality job

A workplace with a story. You’re not pouring coffee in just another café. You work in a museum on the water, get a look behind the scenes, and work alongside colleagues and volunteers from across the museum.

Your ideas count. Got an idea for a new drink, a seasonal dish or a smart promotion? Tell us. We love shaping the menu together with you.

You’re never on your own. You’re part of a close-knit hospitality team led by the Senior Hospitality Team Member and the Hospitality Team Leader, with a buddy at your side for the first few weeks.

Clear pay, no surprises. You can already see what you’ll earn. Pay follows the Museum CAO, the collective labour agreement for Dutch museums, with a year-end bonus and pension build-up with ABP.

    A day on board

    • You set up for the shift, so the counter, restaurant and mise en place are ready before the first guest walks in

    • You’re in the thick of it: on the floor, behind the bar or in the kitchen

    • You serve visitors at the counter and make sure orders go out quickly and neatly

    • You help with banqueting for meetings and events, from setup to the last cup of coffee

    • You work to HACCP standards and keep everything clean, safe and hygienic, front and back of house

    • A guest asks which cake is gluten-free? You know, or you know where to check

    • You restock, handle deliveries and use products carefully, because we want to waste as little as possible

    • You open and close Het Lage Licht together with your colleagues

    • You help new colleagues find their feet, and maybe become someone’s buddy yourself

    Job requirements

    Sound like you?

You’re a natural host, you love a buzz and you stay calm when it gets busy. You see what needs doing and do it, without anyone having to ask. And you enjoy working as a team, with your hospitality colleagues and with the rest of the museum.

    • You have hospitality experience, for example in a restaurant, café, coffee bar or counter concept. A side job during your studies counts too

    • You work neatly and have an eye for detail

    • You stay friendly and calm, even when it gets hectic

    • You know the basics of HACCP and allergens, or you pick them up quickly

    • You’re flexible: mostly daytime and weekends, with the occasional evening event

    • You speak good Dutch, as you’ll be talking with guests and colleagues all day. Good English is a big plus, as we also welcome international visitors

    • A Sociale Hygiëne diploma (the Dutch certificate for responsible alcohol service) is a plus

    • A BHV and/or AED certificate is a plus, but you can also get it with us

Don’t tick every box, but can you picture yourself here? Apply anyway. We look at who you are, not just at your CV.

    What you get

    • A job of 32–36 hours a week, mostly daytime and weekends, with the occasional evening event

    • Pay according to the Museum CAO: scale 3–4, €2,586–€3,204 gross per month based on a full-time contract of 36 hours

    • A year-end bonus of 3.4% under the Museum CAO

    • A free Museumkaart, giving you free entry to hundreds of museums across the Netherlands

    • Staff discount in our museum shop and restaurant

    • A close-knit hospitality team and a museum full of colleagues and volunteers who are just as welcoming as you

    • A buddy to help you settle in during your first weeks

    • The chance to get your BHV and AED certificates with us

    • One diversity day a year, to spend on a moment that matters to you

    • Pension build-up with ABP. Sounds far away, but the museum pays a large part of the premium, and future you will be grateful
